Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band - Safe As Milk (1967)

It's not always going to be punk. I'm pulling these from my collection completely at random, so if you're looking for some kind of consistency this isn't the place. Anyway, the first Captain Beefheart album. The general consensus seems to be that Trout Mask Replica is the watershed Beefheart album but I've always preferred the more straight forward blues-inspired works like this, Strictly Personal, and Clear Spot. Safe As Milk is a strange album, but one that I'd recommend to just about anyone.

  2. Of all the Magic Band variants, this first one is my personal favorite.

All the way up to the Mirron Man sessions, the St. Clair/Cotten/Handley version was the heaviest.
