The Ex - History Is What's Happening (1982)

A friend of mine introduced me to The Ex a few months back. I'm still in the midst of "discovering" them - they've put out a ton of stuff, some of it as recently as 2010 - but so far this is my favorite of the recordings I've had the pleasure of hearing. It's their second album, and finds them in aggressive post-punk mode. As I understand it, the band gets very experimental as their career progresses. Comparisons are hard to make. History Is What's Happening reminds me a little of Really Red's Teaching You The Fear, another great record, although the song arrangements come in shorter blasts here. In any case, it's a severely underrated classic as far as I'm concerned, and I can't help but wonder how I'd managed to avoid it all these years.

  1. They are still around. I saw them last year a couple of times including one show with Ken Vandermark and Mats Gustaffson on horns. Great stuff.
