The Ugly - Disorder (1977-1978)

The Ugly were a '77-style punk band from Toronto. They were, according to the liner notes for this disc, quite a set of rough characters: known for inciting brawls, members were consistently finding themselves in and out of prison. Vocalist Mike Nightmare would apparently wear disguises to avoid being picked up by the police. Additionally, The Ugly seems to have had a volatile feud with fellow Canadian punkers, The Viletones (their guitarist is quoted as calling Steve Leckie a "spoiled rich kid" and the band once hurled a flaming guitar at him during a Viletones performance). The majority of this compilation is made up of 4-track tapes that sat unreleased for twenty-plus years in a garage. The sound quality is remarkably good considering, and it's a wonder they survived. Not that you have to choose a side, but if we're talking Viletones vs. The Ugly, I'll take the latter any day. I like them both, but Disorder just happens to get a lot more play than A Taste Of Honey in my household.
