"Synth-punk" is not a genre I have much interest in. There are, however, exceptions; and LA's Screamers are one of them. Comparisons are often drawn to Suicide, who were operating out of New York around the same time, but I've always found the Screamers - who practiced a much more aggressive and discordant approach than their east coast peers - to be a superior listening experience. That is, despite the fact that they never released a proper album...or EP, or single, for that matter. There are demos and live recordings though, all of which have been heavily bootlegged. This 2001 collection is, as far as I know, the only authorized release of their much sought after material (and, from what I understand, even this one is only semi-legitimate). If I had a complaint, it might be that the focus lies too heavily on live performances, especially since I'm aware - due to the aforementioned bootlegs - that there is a hefty serving of demos that have been left out of the mix. Still, what is here is rather excellent, and there's two full discs of it. In A Better World, at the end of the day, will adequately hold me over until (hopefully) someone gets around to putting out a full collection of remastered Screamers demos.
