Cargo Cult - Strange Men Bearing Gifts (1986)

Being the huge fan that I am of his previous band, I have to admit that upon my first experience hearing Randy "Biscuit" Turner in this post-Big Boys project, I felt a tad disappointed. Since then though, I've come to appreciate Cargo Cult on their own terms. Gone are the danceable funk-influenced numbers and the breakneck punk thrashers (although there are a couple stellar tracks that lean toward the speedier side of things). Like the Big Boys, however, the guys in Cargo Cult were still striving to mash up a whole boatload of styles. What they ended up with is something wholly original, and makes for one hell of an underrated gem if you can wipe your brain clean of the front man's earlier material. Duane Denison, later of The Jesus Lizard, Tomahawk, and the Legendary Shack Shakers, plays guitar.

  1. there was a post-new wave combo in NYC also called Cargo Cult led by Randy Ludacer, a RISD visual artist who also excelled in music, had the earlier band called Ludacer w/ brother Hal, wonder what happened to them? mr google maybe knows!
