Ruefrex - Capital Letters: The Best Of... (1979-1987)

Ruefrex, from Northern Ireland, gained some brief notoriety in their time for their outward political stance. It seems a good bit of that took place in the press though, as this compilation shows us several different shades of the band, a lot of which lacks the controversial edge they were so known for. When I first came across this release I stuck almost exclusively to the early singles material, since it would be a bit of a stretch to describe the later tracks as "punk". That seemed important to me at the time, but revisiting it recently I found that even the toned down and pop-leaning songs are compelling in their own way - if maybe just a tad overproduced. Worth a listen, or several.
