The first solo recordings from H.R. of Bad Brains. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but I've grown to love this disc over the years. A lot of what's here is marked with the reggae/dub stylings that would eventually become the man's trademark, but luckily for us there are several straight up punk thrashers to be found as well. I would have liked to see him throw more of the latter in as his albums progressed, but I suppose the desire to differentiate his solo work is understandable. In any case, although the sound quality of the material presented here is a little rougher around the edges than what was to come, the '84-'86 tapes make for an endearing collection.

I had no idea there was punk stuff on his solo albums. I've never heard anyone talk about it, ever. This song was rad. Any idea who plays on it?
ReplyDeleteI believe the guitar is Dr. Know on the punk songs. Drums for the whole thing are Earl Hudson (I'm pretty sure, but not positive, that he plays drums on pretty much all of H.R.'s solo stuff).
