I've always had a love/hate relationship with the music of Crass. Some of it - or a lot of it, as I'm beginning to discover all these years after first exposure - is absolutely brilliant. Some of it's...well, not so brilliant. It seems for every genre defining anarcho-punk classic, there is also an unnecessarily long and rambling art project. I'm sure I'll catch some hell for that from fans, and I guess Crass just wouldn't be Crass if they'd released five albums full of Big A Little As; but it sure would have been fun to listen to. In any case, The Feeding of the 5000 is their first LP and is about as straight forward as it gets in their discography. This must have sounded revolutionary in 1978. It still kinda does.
