Obscurity is right. This collection, from the always dependable GTA records, is made up of a whopping forty-one almost entirely forgotten punk tracks dating back to the seventies and eighties. Even now, after nearly a decade of owning this disc and delving into the lesser known annals of punk and hardcore history, I'm still only vaguely familiar with a scant few of the bands represented here: The Dark, The State, and The Units. The rest remain relative mysteries. That said, there's something to like about virtually every song that appears on this compilation, thus proving, as if you had any doubt to begin with, that being forgotten is not necessarily reflective of the quality of the music itself. High Road To Obscurity plays like the best best-of you'd ever be fortunate enough to come across. Now where's volume two, GTA?

Good comp, quite a range of material. I think I bought about half of these tracks back in the day.. all in storage (maybe, if I'm lucky) on the other side of the planet.
ReplyDeleteBrat 'Attitude' and Fuck-Ups 'I think you're shit' have special places in my heart, but there's a lot worth checking out here.
5051 had a corking HxC ep, State and Lost Cause as well. Salvation Army, BPeople, The Dark, and Units ... good stuff. I think the singer (Venus) from Unit 3 with Venus was about 8 yrs old.
Glad you're enjoying it, and thanks for the info!
